We’re delighted to welcome Charmian Johnson to the Yorkshire Ladies Links membership.

Charmian Johnson spent nearly 30 years in the legal profession, including 16 years as a partner at a global law firm. On paper, she had everything - a successful career, respect from colleagues and a life that looked exactly like success from the outside.  But internally, the experience was very different.  Like many high-achieving women, Charmian spent decades pushing herself to work harder, prepare more and prove her worth, often feeling she was never quite good enough despite her achievements.

Everything changed when she began training as a coach and discovered the science behind the nervous system and how chronic pressure can shape the way we think, behave and show up.  For the first time, she understood why we can lack confidence, feel anxious, overwhelmed and stuck in patterns of overwork. The self-blame stopped and she realised this knowledge had the power to help many others.

When it became clear she could not pursue her coaching work and remain a law firm partner, she resigned from the partnership and launched her new career focused on helping others understand the connection between stress, trauma, behaviour and performance.

What Charmian Does Now

Charmian is a Somatic Trauma-Informed Coach and the founder of Charm Johnson Coaching. She also delivers workshops to law firms and professional organisations across the UK as a Brand Partner of The Mental Wellbeing Company.  Her work sits at the intersection of neuroscience, nervous system education and compassionate coaching - helping people understand not just what they are feeling, but why and what they can do about it.

For individuals, Charmian works one-to-one with high-achieving women, particularly lawyers. Many of her clients outwardly appear successful but privately struggle with self-doubt, people-pleasing, perfectionism or imposter feelings. Through coaching and practical nervous system tools, Charmian helps clients build genuine self-trust and calm confidence.

Alongside her coaching work, Charmian delivers leadership and wellbeing workshops for organisations, helping leaders and teams understand the direct link between stress and financial performance. Chronic stress affects communication, decision-making and workplace culture - as well as employee health - leading to increased absence, higher attrition and reduced productivity and wellbeing.

Her workshops give organisations the knowledge and tools to address stress at its root, creating environments where people feel safe, supported and able to perform at their best. Her unique perspective as a former global law firm partner allows her to speak directly to the realities of high-performance professional environments - with credibility that comes from having lived them.

Workshop themes include:

• Beyond Self-Doubt and Imposter Syndrome

• Leading with Confidence: The Nervous System Advantage

• Trauma-Informed Practice in the Workplace

• Unfamiliar Doesn’t Always Register as Growth

Why This Work Matters

Charmian is passionate about helping people understand that many of the struggles we experience are not personal failings, but natural nervous system responses to sustained pressure.  Yet we’ve never been taught this.  By helping individuals and organisations understand this, she believes individuals can thrive and workplaces can become places where both people and performance flourish.

"I've watched brilliant women believe they're the problem when in reality it's their nervous system responding to years of pressure. I know what it feels like to live in survival mode for decades and I don't want other women to stay there longer than they need to."

Charmian is also a volunteer with LawCare (the mental health charity for the legal sector) and an active speaker within legal and professional services networks.

She is based in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire and works with clients and organisations across the UK.
