Yesterday marked a truly significant and emotional day for campaigner and speaker Claire Throssell MBE, a woman whose strength and courage have inspired so many across Yorkshire and beyond.
After years of tireless campaigning, Sir Keir Starmer announced that the government will repeal the presumption of parental involvement in family law. This is the change Claire has been fighting for since the heartbreaking loss of her two sons, Paul and Jack, eleven years ago.
In her own words, Claire shared:
“Yesterday, after five successive governments failed... Sir Keir Starmer finally made a promise to repeal the presumption of parental involvement from the law. Yesterday also marked the eleventh anniversary of the darkest of days... the day when I held my beautiful boy, Paul, the tightest I'd ever held him, but lost him as his life slipped away at just 9 years old. Murdered at the hands of his abusive parent. Jack, just 12, died five days later in my arms, believing he'd saved the life of his little brother because I never told him that Paul had died too.”

Claire’s bravery in sharing her story and her determination to keep her son’s memory alive have touched hearts across the country. Her continued work has been a driving force for change, helping to make sure no child ever has to go through what they did.
At Yorkshire Ladies Links, we’ve been honoured to welcome Claire as a guest speaker at two of our events this year. Most recently, she joined us again as a guest, where we took a moment to highlight her incredible strength and the progress she has made through her campaign.

Melanie Malcolm, founder of Yorkshire Ladies Links, said:
“From the moment Claire and I met many years ago, I promised to help her in any way I could, both personally and through our network. When we welcomed Claire to speak last February, her words touched every single person in the room. I can honestly say it’s not just me who has made that promise of support, but many across our network who care deeply for Claire and the campaign she has fought with such courage.”
Claire’s dedication and determination have finally led to the moment she has worked so hard for, a change in law that will help protect children today, tomorrow and for generations to come.
Claire, we are so proud of you and grateful to have shared part of your journey this year. Your courage continues to inspire every one of us.
Now and always.
