Exhibitor Spotlight: Philip Howard Books - Official Bookseller for Lindsey Burrow's Memoir Take Care

Philip Howard Books Ltd, a cherished independent bookshop, is proud to join the exhibitors and serve as the official bookseller for the Yorkshire Voices Conference.

This special event marks the launch of Lindsey Burrow's inspiring memoir, Take Care: A Memoir of Love, Family & Never Giving Up. The collaboration not only honours Lindsey’s moving story but also highlights Philip Howard Books’ dedication to championing the printed word and supporting their local community.

Founded in 1994 in Rotherham, Philip Howard Books is now approaching its 30th anniversary. This milestone represents decades of passion and commitment to the literary world. Owners Ros and Phil Caplan took over a family-run bookshop with a 40-year legacy and have since nurtured it into a hub of discovery, opening a second location in Roundhay in 1999. For over 20 years, they balanced both branches before consolidating operations at their Roundhay shop, where they’ve built a loyal customer base and celebrated their 25th year of serving the community.

What makes Philip Howard Books unique is its dedication to the personal touch. Every book is handpicked by Ros and Phil, reflecting their belief in the joy of browsing—a tactile and serendipitous experience that online shopping simply cannot replicate. Bespoke ordering and their stellar next-day delivery service have become hallmarks of their business, as has their deep involvement in the lives of their customers, many of whom they’ve watched grow from childhood to adulthood.

As long standing advocates of local authors, Philip Howard Books has championed Yorkshire writers, including acclaimed names like Gervaise Phinn and Frances Brody. The shop also has a rich history of hosting book signings and events, particularly in the sporting world, welcoming legends like Leeds United players and Leeds Rhinos icons. This connection extends to the Burrow family, with Rob Burrow and his wife, Lindsey, holding a special place in the Caplans' hearts. The shop has actively supported the Rob Burrow Centre for MND through book and card sales, further solidifying their bond with the Burrow family and their ongoing fight against motor neurone disease.

Ros comments: "Phil and I feel very close to the Burrow family, and it is an honour and a privilege to help Lindsey launch her new book, Take Care, publishing in February 2025 by Century. She has been an inspiration to all of us, and now her book will help others who are or have been in her position."

Phil was the only rugby league writer who contributed to Rob's book, Too Many Reasons to Live, and he is acknowledged in the book. Phil was Chairman of the Leeds Rugby League Foundation and a trustee for over 10 years, giving him a deep working insight into the charitable side of the club.

Take Care: A Memoir of Love, Family & Never Giving Up explores the deepest reserves of resilience, personal sacrifice, and hope that Lindsey Burrow exhibited daily when her family’s life was upended by Rob’s terminal MND diagnosis. Told in Lindsey’s characteristically humble, charming, and inspirational style, Take Care reflects her life and shares her honest experiences of finding strength during good and bad times to offer readers and families hope for overcoming challenges in their own lives. The book sheds light on the many families across the UK who care for their loved ones with little support. Finally, it is a rousing call to action for society to take better care of one another.

Attendees at the Yorkshire Voices Conference will have the exclusive opportunity to purchase Take Care on the day of the event. Adding to this special occasion, Lindsey Burrow will be present throughout the event as a guest speaker and to personally sign copies of her book, making this a truly memorable experience for all who attend.

Join Philip Howard Books at the Yorkshire Voices Conference, 28th February, 2025, at Wetherby Racecourse and Conference Centre, to celebrate Lindsey Burrow’s remarkable memoir and the enduring spirit of independent bookselling.
